Review/Gallery: Pimps reach new heights in London

It felt to me like their recent show at the WF in Sete had soared to new heights – with a mix of that incredible Pimps energy, the oceanside setting with an immmediate packed upfront dancefloor, the new songs (including a stompin’ Pigbag cover) and classics given an almost pop feel if possible from jazz players this incredible ! YES i’m gushing but i’ve now seen the Soil & “PIMP” Sessions boys perform about 8 shows in about as many cities and last night once again soared to new heights ! literally as seen in the pic below and musically with the band on fire, riffin’ with each other to get to that next plateau.

Some of it may be that it’s a London crowd who think they know what to expect by now and part that Koko’s become an excellent music venue but clearly the Pimps love to play as much and as hard as possible with Shacho agitator at the helm causin’ ruckus with the mighty powerhouse Midorin exploding right back with Akita bass maestro, Tabu Zombie and Motohari’s horn fury and Josei keyin’ it perfectly in sync right back and beyond !

Props to Toshio Matsuura for warmin things up nice like a UFO and GP and the Brownswood crew for another rockin’ WW10 celebration, well fit to follow on from recent Q-Tip and Mulatu and Heliocentrics scorchers, And never forgetting all of you in the crowd/s for the support !

Now me, i’m the lucky lucky fellow tonight who gets still some more Death Jazz tonight in Rotterdam when the Pimps will no doubt take North Sea Jazz by storm together with Shuya Okino’s Kyoto Jazz Massive live and Toshio Matsuura DJ set.

Review: London Celebrates Mulatu

it’s heartwarming that London continues to give love and respect to the Classic and timeless artists that roll through. This past Wednesday was no exception when Ethiopian legend Mulatu Astatke, performing together with The Heliocentrics, was ecstatically celebrated by a capacity crowd at Koko. The diverse mix of musos, new converts and London based Ethiopian allowed for a whole lot of shaking and quivering goin’ on as Mulatu effortlessly strutted his Ethiopiques magic together with the dynamic Heliocentrics crew. I totally dig them on their own Stones Throw releases but their collab with Mulatu on the new ‘Inspiration Information 3′ album on Strut is mindblowing !

It’s only one week to go for the Mulata with The Heliocentrics show at Koko in London and we highly recommend that you do not miss it ! London was the perfect host to Q-TIP’s long awaited and triumphant return after 14 or so years past Saturday ! The Roundhouse was a fitting venue and sensation for this celebration of hip hop legend Q-TIP and his full live band who as promised tore the roof of the sucka ! What def. impressed me as much as the live show, was TIP’s DJ set at the afterparty bumpin’ until 6am together with GP, Simbad, Lefto and the bPM.Thanks to Lefto as well for providing this quick insider view of the Event and Afterparty – respect to all involved and an excellent kickoff to the WW10 celebrations – next one up Mulatu and The Heliocentrics at Koko London on May 20 – tix on sale now.

Q-Tip has truly received the love from the London massive, what with the WW10 Roundhouse show completely sold out weeks ago ! True it’s been eons since the Tribe vibe has been experienced in Londontown, and so in the same spirit the ‘renaissance’ man will be extending the vibes at the official afterparty with a DJ set at this new spot in Shoreditch (see above flyer). Now you know that Need2soul throw down the dopest parties and combine that with the Brownswood crew of GP, Lefto, the bPM and the Work it DJ’s and it’s sure to be the party of the season ! ‘Inspiration Information’ a great name to describe the excellent collaboration projects that the recently revived Strut Records are releasing (#1 Amp Fiddler/Sly & Robbie, #2 Horace Andy/Ashlee Beedle) with #3 being another true gem ! Ethiopia’s maestro Mulatu Astatke together with The Heliocentrics (Stones Throw) is a wonder of classic & the new and in celebration of the forthcoming release they will do a full live show at London’s Koko on May 20th. Tickets have just gone on sale and if in any doubt catch a peek from their phenomenal ‘Broadcasting’ coming together last year – believe me I was there ! A fitting 2nd show in the GP Worlwide 10 year long celebration.
