What makes Record Store Day—which takes place this year on April 17th—are the many special events and unique, ultra-collectible releases that bands and labels are doing in honor of the event.

Blur are getting back together—for Record Store Day. The iconic Britpop group hasn’t recorded a new song together for seven years, but they’re coming together for this great event, started three years ago to celebrate independent record stores and their culture, which have been challenged since the advent of the download era. What makes Record Store Day—which takes place this year on April 17th—are the many special events and unique, ultra-collectible releases that bands and labels are doing in honor of the event. In Blur’s case, their new song, “Fool’s Day,” is being released in a super-limited (1,000 copy) seven-inch vinyl edition. Super-indie Merge Records is releasing three seven-in 45s from the likes of Telekinesis, Superchunk, and a split single from The Love Language & Let’s Wrestle, exclusive to vinyl only. Tom Waits Mule Variations gets an 11th Anniversary Edition printed on 180 gm vinyl with a limited edition Jim Jarmusch photo print, Joe Strummer And The Mescaleros’ Global A GO-GO and Streetcore LPs will be available for the first time on vinyl, while Neko Case’s Middle Cyclone will ring out loud and clear on limited edition clear vinyl. Via Matador, Sonic Youth will do a split singles with the likes of Beck and Jay Reatard, and Pavement will drop an exclusive live album to herald their recent reunion shows. The Flaming Lips will be releasing their Dark Side Of The Moon cover album on limited-edition vinyl, and Sub Pop heroes Beach House will present an exclusive twelve-inch. It’s not just indie stars—pop biggies from Muse to Owl City to classic rockers like Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon will have special themed releases for the day.

If you haven’t noticed, rare vinyl is the name of the game on Record Store Day: the event is in a way a payback to those obsessed fans that actually spend money onmusic and appreciate the limited edition, exclusive objet angle. To further give back to such supporters, there are also any number of barbeques, signings and performances from the likes of Roky Erickson, Dr. Dog, members of the Raconteurs and many other bands at the over 700 stores participating. Unless you’re at Coachella—which will be supporting Record Store Day with special booths and other events, too—there’s sure to be something great happening at a record store near you.
