The Glitch Mob’s innovative head-nod side has come back with a vengeance in their new mixtape, a genius companion piece that redefines Drink The Sea’s moodscapes brilliantly. It does so by pairing the album’s instrumentals and beats with a cappella vocals and grooves from the likes of Lil Wayne, M.I.A., Nas, Jay-Z, Daft Punk, Dr. Dre, Mobb Deep, Freddie Gibbs, Young Jeezy, Busta Rhymes and more.

Urban music has become a global bazaar, as this witty mash-up by West Coast electronic-music legend Kraddy makes clear. On it, Kraddy—a founding former member of the Glitch Mob and one of the most deft proponents of forward California bass music—fuses two decidedly regional grooves: the dubstep of England and classic hip-hop from Northern California.

We ruminated over how leaving a Coachella set early can cause you to miss some key moments, like Jay-Z bringing Beyonce on stage (oops!). You never know what chance pop culture milestone you might miss in the rush to catch another band. Say you skip Deerhunters last song, perhaps, and of course Lady Gaga or something shows up right then to sing a medley of Velocity Girl songs with them (the previous was merely hypothetical—no Gaga sightings at Coachella 2010, alas…).

There’s a belief, a rumor if you will, that California-based bands, DJs, and so on don’t always get booked as readily for Coachella as their non-West Coast counterparts; the thinking is, if you live in California, you’ve probably seen all these acts already a few times, lessening the “wow” factor. That said, every year Coachella turns this idea on its head, featuring a number of great Cali acts in their natural habitat.

“Drive It Like You Stole It” is the first single from the Glitch Mob’s upcoming album Drink The Sea, and it’s, well, a banger with brains. Sure, the beats are huge – thunder huge, tornado huge, blowing-up-the-Death-Star huge: if you know anything about this Los Angeles-based trio, they take what one would think is a hip-hop beat and take it straight to hyperspace.

After a few too many mid-morning bourgeois cocktails and discussions of royalty splits, we moved on to other events through the streets of Austin. The ears were assaulted by Fugazi soundalikes and jazzed-out Beatles covers coming out of bars, restaurants, bank lobbies, wherever along the mobbed 6th and Red River strips—and this was just after noon.
