Andy Warhol’s Factory in New York is possibly one of the most famous art hang-outs of the twentieth century. Photographer Nat Finkelstein documented the scene and created legendary images that have been exhibited at museums and galleries internationally. He also created films. A film made after the Warhol days was at the dawn of rave. Nu Beat is showing for the first time in London as part of the Our History 01 three day exhibition this weekend. Curators Ernesto Leal and Professor Simon Elmer have also selected Wiz’s Weekender, Angus Cameron & Kevin Sampson’s A Short Film About Chilling, Mark Easton’s Clink Street & Alexander Snelling’s Stop Esso. All these films embrace the importance of club culture within society.

Our History 01 is the first exhibition from Our History, an ongoing project archiving the artifacts of the rave movement. Get your rave shoes on, it’s only on for three days 7-9 November at The Huntingdon Project Space, 28 Redchurch St, Shoreditch London

There will be many graphic designs but only be one photo appearing at OUR HISTORY 001, it is called Riot and is by the legendary underground photographer, Nick Waplington, the only British photographer to be in the permanent collection at MOMA. The photo was taken at the ‘94 protests against the Criminal Justice Bill, where thousands of ravers chanted ‘KILL THE BILL’ in London’s Hyde Park. The Criminal Justice Bill marked the end of free parties and outdoor raves in the UK, allowing all soundsystem equipment to be withdrawn indefinitely by the police, and giving them the power to disseminate large numbers of people. The protests took place on July 24th & October 9th. They were attended by large numbers of squatters, road protesters, ravers and travellers. The CJB had several major effects on acid house culture – as well as encouraging the superclubs of the 90s, which were in effect licensed by the government, it also drove a new life into the underground scene.

For more of this kinda acid house history than you can shake a glow stick at, check out the 3 day exhibition, OUR HISTORY, 6-9 November at The Huntingdon Project Space, 28 Redchurch Street, London, E2 7DP.
