KTV: Gil Scott-Heron – Me And The Devil

Gil Scott-Heron’s video for “Me And The Devil”, out Feb 22. Taken from his forthcoming album “I’m New Here” which takes this music legend into new territory sonically (and here visually), a post-apocalyptic landscape filled with dark grimy beats. It’s a refreshing yet honest take on the blues classic, as the revolution seems at hand and Heron is the MC.

KTV Classic: Beastie Boys revisited

Watching a young version of the Beastie Boys perform grunge rock is kind of like watching Dan Marino throw darts. While they definitely appear and sound unpolished, you know they have the mechanics to get the job done, thus the potential to go on to bigger and better things. But this video, from New York’s public access program The Scott and Gary Show, was shot in 1984; Hip-Hop wasn’t lucrative yet.

KTV: Ryan McGinness “The Run Up”

Ryan McGinness is creating language with his art. DFA: Still Killing It

It’s kind of amazing: in its near-decade of existence, the DFA record label has never been wack. Ever. It’s kind of statistically impossible how high the level of quality the New York-based, globally-impacting imprint has been. Dance music has a shelf life only slightly longer than that of a fly, but DFA’s groove have proven damn near immortal. How about a slightly pointless recap? Okay, good…

Track of the Day: Yacht “Waste of Time (Dub)”

Yacht made one of 2009’s best albums with See Mystery Lights, but this new dub version of one of its standout tracks, “Waste of Time,” proves timeless: it could’ve come from a mid-‘80s vinyl twelve-inch – the kind that could only be found in a back rack at an obscure record store in New York City.

The History of Tennis Influencing Fashion

There have obviously been some fashion missteps in the past 500 years in the sport of tennis. Henry VIII pushed for “tall stockings” and “breeches” a la Shakespeare, and the first tennis shoe was a “croquet sandal” made of canvas and rubber sole. However, there are some glaring moments that proved fleeting like animal prints, unitards…
