Africa 10: The World Comes to Africa

Africa10 is an all-encompassing documentary film project, spearheaded by will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas, that takes South Africa’s – and by extension, Africa’s as a whole – inaugural hosting of the 2010 World Cup as an opportunity to explore the cultures and struggles of African people through the ubiquitous presence of soccer (read: football) in peoples’ lives throughout the world.

Classic Flick: Ice Cube’s Ode To The Raider Nation

How did I know the Raiders were cool? When all the breakdancers in my school – which was in suburban Chicago, far from the Raiders’ then-L.A. home – started wearing the team’s distinctive silver and black, pirate-themed gear. Ice Cube apparently seems to agree – he’s made a documentary about his Raider love for ESPN called “Straight Outta L.A”

Gilles Peterson Sportswide: Europe’s Top 5 Football

I think I’m gonna pass by the bookies today. The one nearby closed down recently – its probably got something to do with the online gambling explosion – but I can’t do all that. I only bet a couple of times a year anyway – the national and perhaps the odd game or 2. But today I’m gonna try and put a bet on the 5 champions of Europe.

Gilles Peterson Sportswide report out of Sicily

its Friday so it must be Sicily – (I’m playing in one of the most beautiful clubs on earth tonight, mercati generale) – I remember being there for the last World Cup and being shocked that the matches weren’t being aired on the national free view stations – and so there I was walking around the outer suburbs of Catania looking for a cafe that might have a match on – clearly for someone who looks forward to World Cups 2 years ahead, this was a desolate situation to be in – specially in a country with such football pedigree – oh well, Berlusconi and his ways eh? …..

Jocks Vs. Freaks: Who Says Musicians Can’t Be Both?

It’s a common misperception that musicians and jocks are mutually exclusive commodities. Au contraire, mon frère: many of music’s most innovative and popular acts are major fans of sport – if not stellar athletes themselves. Nowhere is that more apparent than the World Wide Web…

Sports Crossovers: Is Tiger Going to Cricket?

Found on a UK sports gambling site, these crazy juxtapositions are obviously taking the piss, but you can almost see their points. Tiger would take any other sport to a new level, especially here in the US. Cricket is still a mystery to much of his audience…

PLAY: Best Sports Meets Music Moments

“The Rumble In The Jungle”

This heavily hyped 1974 boxing battle between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in Zaire was one of the sport’s greatest moments, but also a musical TKO. King jamming to thousands at the top of their game…
