Brownswood is particularly messy at the moment, probably because Gilles just got back from gigs in Japan and so there’s been a mountain of promos building up which he has now unleashed on the office. This 66 Mix was conceived one afternoon rooting around on the floor, under the table, in the kitchen, in the lounge and even in the studio. Nuggets were unearthed – among them some obscure (and most likely unreleased) re-edits, a couple of distinctly underrated joints from Vaceo and Mpho and a handful of classic remixes from Hefner, Domu, Matthew Herbert (in his Dr Rockit guise). When you’re consistently beaten about the head with brand new music, it’s quite nice to go back to some well-loved tracks from the recent past.

We hope you enjoy this mix as much as we enjoyed arguing about the tracklisting.

You already know how much we’ve been diggin’ the just released Gilles Peterson presents Havana Cultura – New Cuba Sound double album on Brownswood ! and so we’re thrilled to be heading to the London and Paris shows coming up very soon (see info below). We predict that this album is going to be with us for a long time, kinda like Gilles’ mighty Nuyorican Soul album has been and so we urge you to get yourself a copy and to check out these first wave of events to celebrate the release.

All the live events have a 9 piece Havana Cultura band direct from Cuba rippin it up, featuring special guests Danay, the 24 year old new discovery (think Badu and Jill Scott) and Ogguere, the statesmen of Cuban rap + DJ’s Gilles Peterson himself hosting and spinning with the Sofrito crew (known for their legendary Tropical London warehouse parties) DJ Simbad, Lubi, Vince Vella (the album’s co-producers) and the mighty Radio Nova crew in Paris.

Q-Tip has truly received the love from the London massive, what with the WW10 Roundhouse show completely sold out weeks ago ! True it’s been eons since the Tribe vibe has been experienced in Londontown, and so in the same spirit the ‘renaissance’ man will be extending the vibes at the official afterparty with a DJ set at this new spot in Shoreditch (see above flyer). Now you know that Need2soul throw down the dopest parties and combine that with the Brownswood crew of GP, Lefto, the bPM and the Work it DJ’s and it’s sure to be the party of the season ! After months of planning we are so ready to enjoy this 3 day journey of K-Space Sessions and get up close and personal with our global music family. It all kicks off this Thursday at K-Space right in the center of Amsterdam with our globetrotter DJ’s and artists comin’ in strong from the UK, Italy, Germany, Belgium, US and NL of course. Admission is free and with sessions from 6-9.30pm, it def sets the right mood for the late night parties around town. We just so happen to have two rockin’ parties as well on Thursday 23rd at our fave local spot Struik (Rozengracht 160) with Gilles Peterson, the bPM and Lefto inna Brownswood stylee and our dynamo closing party on Saturday 25th proudly hosts the Buzzin’ Fly crew of Ben Watt, Justin Martin and Charles Webster at the Supperclub.

REJOICE TO SOIL & ‘PIMP’s DEATH JAZZ SESSION

I am ripping up Soil & “PIMP” Sessions’ death certificate. Yeah thats right, I too am joining in on this silly debate on what is and isn’t DEATH JAZZ. You don’t have to be a high browed jazz “know it all” to see how gnarly and unconventional this group’s music is. Being able to witness their testimony on Monday night in front of London’s Roundhouse audience of 1000+ strong, None of us present, could deny the fact that this is the kind of a la mode music that makes everything and everyone come both to life and light! Just check out the crowd’s ecstatic response. Hands waving, feet’s lifted, hips spinning- all in a rejoicing salute to Soil & “PIMP” technical brilliance and vivacious stage spectacle. Monday night was not a fatal party. Soil & “PIMP” Sessions are very much alive. I just hope my “not death jazz” opinion doesn’t upset six extremely humble Japanese musicians. Soil & “PIMP” Sessions releases + the latest album by J.A.M the “PIMPS” trio of keys, drums and bass, are available on Brownswood Recordings. Stay tuned for exclusive video being cut as we speak.

JOSE JAMES DEBUTS VIDEO 5 MAY & TOUR DATES

Jose James is proving to be way more than a dreamer than his latest album title suggests – since way before its release, he had based himself in London, meeting and gigging with the who’s who of the immense local scene. His friends and family are ever growing with the likes of Gilles Peterson (his Brownswood Recordings signor), Ben Westbeech, Simbad and Flying Lotus to name a few as mates and mixer/remixers, a monthly Brownswood Session at NY’s Nublu – and now back on Tour in celebration of all this and his brand new video of ‘Park Bench People’. Lucky for us in Amsterdam, since Jose will be in effect to debut his new video on 5th May at K-Space on the Niuewezijds Voorburgwal 262 between 18h & 20h. Come meet Jose up close and personal and see/feel for yourself how being ‘The Dreamer’ can only be a good thang ! (Check out the myspace page for all the tour dates)

At the School of ‘Dark’ everything seems to go – from poetry and play- writing to music producing and lugging records. Versatile is an  understatement when speaking about Charlie. Most Londoners would  best describe Charlie Dark as the official authority of what’s fresh  and spicy in british black music and culture. No doubt about it, this  crafty chieftain has played an integral part in shaping what we  consider to be fly in these times! Remember the trip hop group Attica  Blues, the legendary arts collective club night Blacktronica, and the  recent fusion experiment African Beats Tour – Charlie is behind all  those trailblazing musical journeys. Yeah he is that dude! The bevy  at Brownswood knows that “Charlie’s Got Bass Too” and will be together with GP , Youngsta , Simbad, and Thristian aka BPM aka “kool  aid smile kid!”at our favorite East Village spot on Great Eastern St in East London.

EAST VILLAGE STEPS DUBWISE Bi-COASTAL

GP in the area at East Village in Shoreditch monthly with Brownswood Loves Bass pictured with last edition’s special NY guest DJ Moni in effect and a shout out to Kuni (stage left) off to his new home on the canals. So what’s with this East Village bi-coastal bizness then ? well you know that NYC’s long renowned East Village is synonymous with words such as ultraist, trend-y, and alors Basquait (back in THE day).

East London’s village carries as much of the same attribute/s but we have Basquait Strings instead an now aptly enuff, we have EAST VILLAGE a small club with a BIG idea. Formerly known as Medicine Bar, East Village (89 Great Eastern Street in Shoreditch) has given itself a swanky refit and fully loaded with an eskimo sound system that certainly blows ! Good reason why all the top DJ names are heading East including the Worldwide GP himself and la familia Brownswood.

Back again this Thursday 20 March with very special honorees Benga (the reigning prince of dubstep), Domu (treble dictator) and Ross Allen (London’s music renaissance man). No need to jump on the F train for downtown NYC, just look out for the yellow warning sign on Great Eastern Street – 7pm to 3am

The 2nd edition of Brownswood Loves Bass is already upon us in Londontown and especially good timing as we just peeped the March edition of XLR8R which features the 20th March special guest BENGA on it’s cover ! together with his best ‘dubplate’ mate Skream – South London represent ! The cover story follows the troup of leading producers in a journey exploring the esoteric sonic rebellion we love to call dubstep. To think that before there were fruity loops, these young illusionists were recording deep dark beats on Playstations. – now look at how the weighty have grown from the subversive world of garage. Try as hard as he might our favorite ‘worldwide’ globetrotter GP has not managed yet to be on both coasts in one night (without the Concord that is), so instead his Brownswood family will go bi-coastal this Thursday 28 February ! London’s latest addition to Shoreditch’s already boomin’ nightlife, the aptly named ‘East Village’ (get it) ?) will host Gilles’ monthly Brownswood Loves … Bass sessions while the original East Village stalwart Nublu in New York brings on round four of the Brownswood Sessions with Jose James happily enjoying his new release The Dreamer with Elan Mehler + Ubiquita’s DJ Reborn.

Our lady in red has been captivating dance floors across the  spectrum. Having started collecting records since the age of nine,  while still practicing to walk in her mother’s heels DJ Moni is a  complete multi threat talent. Moni’s impressive resume reads- award  nominated contemporary theatre composer, one part of the dynamic all  female dj collective Ubiquita, and now the NYC Brownwood Session Resident  DJ. Moni has shared the stage with legendary performers from rock  icon Sir Paul McCartney to world class house producers Masters at  Work.

Did I also mention she is a fierce yogi too! Dj Moni will be  popping into to town and gracing Shoreditch with her enchanting  presence at the first installment of Gilles Peterson’s new club night  “Brownswood Loves Bass” Thursday 28th at East Village. The two are prepping for Jose’s album, digging through crates, and enjoying the English summer as much as possible.
