It’s only up for six more days, but don’t miss this one: Thom Yorke co-hosted a radio show with Kspace pal Gilles Peterson on the BBC, and it is incredible! Peterson and the Radiohead major domo go head to head, following each other with tracks that inspire them, and it’s an absolutely thrilling ride! Listening to Yorke’s selections, the listener really gets a sense of what thrills him sonically: a real thread emerges that draws a straight line into the disparate influences that go into his sound. Gaining a window into one of today’s most adventurous musical minds is a real gift, and Yorke’s taste is superb: he moves from the German abstract drum and bass of Christoph de Babalon and Madlib and Quasimoto’s fractured hip-hop to the funky krautrock of Can, Blaqstarr’s gritty Baltimore grooves and the digital riddim insanity of South Rakkas Crew. It’s all so good, it makes one think that if that whole Radiohead thing doesn’t work out, Yorke might have a future as a radio DJ!

This year we have many things to give thanks for – today in particular, this uber-dope mini mix from the great St Andrew which you can download here.

We’ve blown up St Andrew on ye olde KSPACE a couple times before, but the kid seems to be doing a fine job of blowing up on his own! You might’ve heard about his genre-evading jams that span everything from jackin’ French-touched electro to West Coast glitchstep, his official remixes for the likes of Yelle, Freeland, Nalepa et al, his dope E.P. Cosmic Terror… Well, St Andrew has done it again, people. Dubstep don Rusko personally selected the up & coming DJ producer to do a special mini mix on his show on BBC’s 1xtra station.

And it is a killer, sans filler: just 600 seconds of brutal bass, electronic funk, and more – all in less time than it takes to eat a slice of pizza. So get down to St Andrew, but beware: his beats are bringing terror to the cosmos. And don’t miss St Andrew bringing the ruckus to the great Low End Theory club in Los Angeles this coming January with labelmates/homies Virtual Boy, FuzZ, and the Nalepa Dub Orchestra…

As we’ve written about many times here on Kspace, the post hip-hop faction coming out of Cali has gone worldwide over the course of the past year. The honorable ambassador is the UK’s Radio One DJ Mary Anne Hobbs, who is singularly responsible for introducing the LA players to their UK and European counterparts. She’s been a huge champion to folks like Flying Lotus, Nosaj Thing, Gaslamp Killer and the Glitch Mob. Now she’s making a visit to her home away from home this week, and will take her spot on the turntables for the Low End Theory massive. On Wednesday, September 23 you can find the blonde, presumably leather-clad beauty amongst the beatheads, and there will bound to be some new discoveries and special guests. UK or US? We’ll have to wait and see. She’s also here celebrating her newest release, Wild Angels, which is a nod to her destination of choice as well as to the number of Angelenos on the tracklist.

Okay, today’s track of the day is a very long track – a bit over 45 minutes, actually. That’s because it’s comprised of many tracks – it’s tastemaking/shapeshifting DJ supreme Mary Anne Hobbs set at the most recent Sonar festival (where she was followed by Joker) – you can download it here courtesy of Brainfeeder, as well as a track-listing of her ace selection of forward thinking, bass booming, speaker thrashing, genre-exploding grooves.
There’s a reason Hobbs’ new Sonar mix is blowing up at blogs and got twitter all a-twitter (we discovered it via a tweet from Boreta of the mighty Glitch Mob). Thanks to her mucho influential BBC radio show, revolutionary artists like Kode9, Burial and Flying Lotus are not only getting discovered, they’re being embraced by wide numbers of people who might not be expected to get down to such challenging, head-expanding grooves; listening to her on the radio is a guaranteed way to be up to date on the freshest, glitchiest beats. Most of all, Hobbs’ sets get crowds moving, but don’t insult punters’ intelligence – but nor are they po’- faced and grim and beardy a la IDM: it’s clear for Hobbs when she plays she finds the future in the funk, and vice versa.

um and yeah, she’s a biker chick for real ! but more on that next time

With this whole Internet thing, you just can’t sleep. Something will be up on the Web one day, the next day it’s gone into the online abyss… To that end, you may have missed the BBC DJ mix from Alex Metric. It’s the young wunderkind’s first edition as a once-a-month host of the BBC radio show “In New DJs We Trust.” Alas Radio One’s policy, they only leave up radio shows for a week after airing, and Metric’s mix is only up for two more days so… Don’t sleep, but you can watch for next month’s.

It’s clear from this set that Alex Metric is one of the most bright and shiny lights to come out of the U.K.’s electro/dance rock/whatever scene in recent memory, as both a dj and artist/producer/remixer (check out his absolutely insane Phoenix and Ladyhawke remixes) and as a spinner. Metric’s DJ selection is totally fresh, spanning both brilliant new bangers du jour (check Grum’s incredible remix of “Borderline” by Metric’s mentor, Adam Freeland) and olde tymes (anyone forgot how dope “Leave Home” by Chemical Brothers is?). Metric also plays here Les Rhythmes Digitales classic “From Disco To Disco” in a set comprising the songs that made him want to make music. It’s a perfect choice, as Metric may be the new Jacques Le Cont/Stuart Price for the 2000s. Admittedly there was nothing wrong with the old one, but it’s always good to have as many people making the freakiest, funkiest, most fun grooves. Sure, you could wait until Marine Parade releases his debut artist album later this year, but why? As we said before, don’t sleep…
