You know what’s worse than not being able to sleep the night before the big race? Not being able to mentally check out whether or not you have everything ready. After having been through so many of these nights, I’ve compiled a list of must-haves here that you can use to make sure if at all possible you’re at least able to rest (somewhat). That way you easily know that you have all the stuff you need (we’re assuming that you’ve trained already, so I left that off the list). Oh also, it’s an absolute MUST that no article of clothing is brand new and hasn’t been road tested on similar or near distance (I’ve heard sock horror stories, seriously!) Here’s your list:
Racing Bib
Exta Safety Pins
Racing/Timing Chip
Running Shoes
Socks
Running Shorts/Tights/Capris/Skirt/PantsĀ < your choice
Lucky Running Top (+sports bra for the ladies)
Garmin (fully charged)
iPod/headphones (fully charged)
Body Glide
Sunscreen
Gu, Gels, Bars (fuel of choice)
ID
Cash
OPTIONAL
*cell phone
*coverups
*lucky racing hat
*sunglasses
And of course a MAP and plan of action… know where to park, who you’re meeting… what corral you’re in, account for traffic and cluster effs near the parking lot so you have enough time to get to your corral and take a few deep breaths and stretch. I’ll be trying to remember all this for my race on Sunday. Above all else, remember to keep an eye out for those event photographers – and SMILE no one wants to see how miserable you look at mile 8 or 18 even!
