How To: Take Rock Star Race Photos

If you just PR’d at your last race or are running your very first marathon one of the most exciting things after the accomplishment (besides the finisher’s medal) is capturing the best moments on film. I have yet to meet one runner who is consistently happy with their race or finisher photos. If you are looking leave out as many horrific and traumatizing race photos from the brightroom events database here are some tips:

Choose your outfit wisely.
Remember that you are 1) going to sweat and 2) going to be caught MOVING in your clothes. I usually go with standard black or white because I have yet to find a colored dry fit top that doesn’t show off sweat stains. Also make sure that your BIB# is clearly visible on the front portion of your clothing as that is how the are tagged with your name.

Know where they are.
Race maps will usually tell you where the photographers are on the course or will mention them on the website (usually at 2-3 mile markers and then at the finish line depending on the size of the race). Once you know where they are, you can plan accordingly on where on the course you want to be seen.

Run like hell.
As soon as you spot the photographer make sure that you are actually *running* look towards the camera, wave if you’d like (I tend to throw the sign of the beast every now and then just to give my photos a little punk rock edge). I usually weave out of the crowd of other runners and will kick a slow motion sprint towards the photog to grab his or her attention. That way I know I get at least one picture where I am the focal point.

Have a back up.
In case the professionals don’t catch you at your best, make sure that you take your own camera, or that friends and family who come to support you come equipped with one.

Smile.
Or do your best to try to smile. Think about how much you’re accomplishing – how could you not smile?

This song always makes me do a pose/dance during a run (don’t judge me because it’s Brit):

  1. Totally with you on throwing up the horns at photographers, but I never do it with intent to look good. (If you saw my race outfits, you’d understand.) Your back up plan is my one and only plan. My wife takes better photos than most race photographers; maybe not because she’s a better photographer, but because she understands the concepts of light and shade and doesn’t have to shoot from where the race director tells her to, plus she’s only trying to photograph one runner. Of course, lately she’s been running too, so that’s not going to work, but how many photos of me grasping for breath do I really want? ;-)

  2. Great tips! I could have used them on Sunday as NONE of my “official” race photos turned out to be worth buying. Fail.
