It was inevitable—YACHT has grown up.
Where the music of Jonas Bechtolt was once primarily spastic-slash-abstract dance beats, his latest album, “See Mystery Lights,” finds him exploring a shockingly wide variety of sonic disciplines. From the ‘60s swing of “The Afterlife” to the melancholy indie-pop of “Psychic City (Voodoo City),” YACHT’s new album “See Mystery Lights” shows that Bechtolt is finding his footing outside of his software-assisted comfort zone.
It would be easy to chalk it up to having to step up his game in light of being signed to vaunted indie label DFA. “Summer Song” was his first release on the label, and the man-machine stamp of post-punk dance mania is all over it.
Combining a murky bass line with handclaps, chanted Gang of 4-style vocals and the DFA signature cowbell, the request to “Move your feet to the summer song” is an easy one to follow. A mixtape essential for the summer of 2009.
