If you are follower of Kspace, then you know we’re fans of Bat For Lashes, having written incessantly about her music, her photography, and her connection to professional cricket! (apply the appropriate links here) Well, the Bat love isn’t stopping yet, thanks to two amazing new remixes off the lovely Ms. Natasha Khan’s album Two Suns, one of the most acclaimed of 2009.
Two Suns will soon be re-released in “special edition” form (which is already out in the U.K.), including many rare and unreleased bonus tracks, including an amazing remix of the song “Sleep Alone” by TV On The Radio production guru Dave Sitek. Sitek calls it the “909’s In Dark Times” mix, and that’s what it sounds like exactly: he layers electro drum machines, disco guitars, eerie keyboards, ‘80s guitars and a generally IDM approach to deconstructing sounds all while keeping an eye on the dancefloor. It’s exactly the kind of futurist idiosyncrasy that makes us love TV On The Radio – although weirdly the whole combination makes B4L’s Natasha Khan sound even more like she’s in Heart than ever!
Another Bat For Lashes remix making the rounds of the underground is Skream’s revision of another great song off “Two Suns,” “Pearl’s Dream.” Skream of course is the dubstep don of the moment, and also one of the most in-demand remixers right now thanks to his absolutely shattering, bass-booming smash take on La Roux’s “In For The Kill.” Doing La Roux and Bat For Lashes right in a row makes Skream seem like the go-to guy for reshaping the sonics of eccentric U.K. indie divas, and his “Pearl’s Dream” doesn’t disappoint. It’s different, though, from the loping dubstep combined with furious drum and bass he deployed so effectively on “In For The Kill”: instead, Skream here laces Khan’s soaring, spooky vocal with old-skool U.K. garage/two-step riddims. While it doesn’t have the rollercoaster twist and turns of his La Roux collaboration, Skream’s “Dream” proves a good song can only get better with some fat bass and a nostalgically skippy club thump behind it.
