Emalkay is proving to be latest boy wonder of dubstep – everyone from Mary Anne Hobbs to the genre’s top spinners seems to agree. He maintains his reign on his remix of classic rave group Faithless’ new song “Sun To Me.” Emalkay proves the best of all worlds: he’s got the massive bass and syncopated futurist boom bap of, say, Joker and his Dub Police labelmate Rusko, and at the same time there’s a level of innovation that suggests Kode 9 and Burial. Emalkay manages to create real atmosphere, with keyboard flourishes both Goth and gothic and a sense of real sonic space, without forgetting what it takes to get a dancefloor moving. As well, unlike many remixers, this dope Londoner doesn’t just turn the original material into a new track, but keeps the integrity of the song fresh while turning it into another animal. Further proof that dubstep isn’t getting stale, but consistently mutating into fresh, other forms…
