Track of the Day: Woodhands – “Pockets”

In case you’ve been living under a rock, electro-pop is the new indie rock flavor. Reminiscent of ’80s new wave, Woodhands take the notion of doing something throwback and add pounds of epicness and glam to the traditional bath of synth and drum loops. Canadians Dan Werb and Paul Banwatt are best known for their vivid live performances, last year getting acclaim while at SXSW playing for a room full of jaded, affected indie rock veterans (which is quite a testament). While the elements that make up their music — keytar, loops, DFA-style lyrics — are not revolutionary, the end result is a two-man dance party, complete with emotion and complexity to the point that “pop” is rendered arbitrary. Woodhands is for fans of electronic music that never considered themselves as such. The obvious influences are New Order, Depeche Mode and even the oft-mentioned LCD, but as I’ve said, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Worth checking for.
