“These girls fall like dominoes, dominoes…” Just one listen to the new single from the (rightly) much hyped U.K. duo The Big Pink, and that chorus will be permanently embedded in your brain. The slamming drums, the swirling synths, the ethereal harmonies, pop riffs so sticky you’ll feel like you’re covered with wet sugar – The Big Pink have it all here. Even more shocking, as much as the Big Pink’s sound is huge and arena ready on “Dominos,” it has undeniable indie-cred roots, thanks to the backgrounds of the band’s members, Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell. Furze used to play guitar with digital-hardcore demi-god Alec Empire, while Cordell ran the influential Merok label, early home to the likes of Crystal Castles and the Klaxons (another fun fact: Cordell is also the scion of legendary rock producer Denny Cordell, who helped make hits with everyone from the Moody Blues to the Cranberries and was, believe it or not, a forefather of roller disco!).
The Big Pink started blowing our minds with their previous single, ”Velvet,” but “Dominos” (co-produced by amazing studio god Paul Epworth, who’s done killer work for Bloc Party, amongst others) confirms that of all the neo-shoegaze whatever bands, Cordell and Furze have what it takes to be megastars while maintaining their integrity. Indeed, their upcoming album, A Brief History of Love (due in mid-September), is as good as their singles, demonstrating that The Big Pink just may be the most perfect holy trinity of the Beach Boys, My Bloody Valentine, and the Verve we’ve come across yet. But don’t just take our word for it – hear for yourself. “Dominos” is available as a free download, and the entire album is streaming for one week, over at The Big Pink’s official website. Just don’t blame us if you spend the rest of your waking days humming “These girls fall like dominos, dominos…”
