You’ve heard South Rakkas Crew, even if you didn’t realize it: the Crew – actually the duo of Alex Greggs and Dennis “Dow Jones” Shaw – have been responsible for some of the hottest bangers around, both their own, and others. South Rakkas are down with Diplo’s Mad Decent label (which released the SRC classic “Mad Again”), and have done production for M.I.A. Greggs alone has a rep for mixing/production that gets him work with all the heavy hitters: T-Pain, Lily Allen, Kelis, Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Justin Timberlake, Beck, Yo Majesty, Tricky and Duran Duran have all benefited from his genius studio skills.
This Toronto-via-Florida-via-Los Angeles have also made some of the sickest dancehall riddims shredding woofers today (no surprise Diplo is a fan and collaborator): their riddims include “Clappas,” “Red Alert,” “Bionic Ras,” and “Chinkuzi,” and they’ve produced biggies like Elephant Man and Mr. Vegas. But digital reggae isn’t all that South Rakkas can do – they’re masters of all danceable grooves, as is clear from the Crew’s latest track, “Robot’s Revenge.” It is a stunner, baby: mixing French filter funkadelica with soaring classic-rock guitars, “Robot’s Revenge” gets down like the bastard offspring of Daft Punk, Electric Light Orchestra, and Boston! Our pal Alex Metric actually debuted “Robot’s Revenge” on his BBC radio show, and a release is likely on Adam Freeland’s Marine Parade label is imminent. Is their anything this crew can’t do?
