Track of the Day: PANTyRAiD – “Beba”

Crunk, dubstep, West Coast glitch – all the major food groups come together in the awesomeness that is PANTyRAiD. No, PANTyRAiD isn’t the new Todd Phillips R-rated comedy – it’s the two-man supergroup comprising MartyParty (government name: Marty Folb) and Ooah (Josh Mayer, of Glitch Mob fame). “Beba” is the duo’s first single, and yes, it will rip your speaker’s woofer in two… As a result, “Beba” is a great introduction to the PANTyRAiD sound – or, that is, sounds. In the song, vocal samples are chopped and screwed by Party and Ooah, digi-bass is distressed to its illogical extreme, irie dancehall boom-bap gets twisted into a new, unrecognizable form, there’s a fat beat that could work in both Atlanta strip clubs and underground London raves, and enough gorgeous atmospheric ambience to make Brian Eno grin.

Indeed, “Beba” is the sound of the future, available right this second (download a special edit of the track for free here as well as other related goodies). “Beba” is highly representative of the amazing new album from PANTyRAiD, The Sauce, that’s being released today on the mighty Marine Parade label. The Sauce looks to be one of 2009’s sleeper hits – IDM enough to make hipsters feel cool, down and dirty urban enough to entertain a true hip-hop head, with intriguing ethno-world influences, synth attitude and loud-soft dynamics that make it stand apart in a world filled with substandard sub-bass. Fans of the grimily psychedelic grooves of Ooah’s Glitch Mob won’t be disappointed, surely, but there’s something about PANTyRAiD that makes it its own wild animal. There’s definitely a sense of DJ journey on The Sauce that puts it in a league with say, the genre-redefining work of DJ Shadow, or the more accessible sides of Aphex Twin. In other words, PANTyRAiD make music that’s easy to get buck to, but also makes you think a little, despite the seemingly frathouse-friendly name. But then again, that’s the genius of PANTyRAiD: the minute you think you’ve locked into the band’s sound persona, it shape-shifts into something completely different – yet equally dope. So check out “Beba,” and pick up The Sauce – just don’t blame us if you have to buy a new set of speakers in the morning.
