Track of the Day: Mos Def, “Supermagic”

Off of his new album The Ecstatic, Mos Def has released his dopest track in years, “Supermagic.” Over a manic psychedelic Turkish guitar line that could’ve been snatched off a Gaslamp Killer groove, Mos Def rhymes with blazing ferocity: he really sounds hungry here, and angry. Dropping verses that sound like battle rhymes, this is the angriest the conscious Brooklyn B-boy has come off since “I Against I.” At the same time, he toys compellingly with the rhythms and the slanguage, even riffing memorably on the chorus to Taana Gardner’s classic dance track “Heartbeat.” What makes “Supermagic” most compelling is that Mos Def sounds truly unhinged for the first time in a while: while even his weakest music is at worst tasteful, here he sounds like, screw the haters, cuz now he’s really going for it…
