Who said supergroups were strictly a ‘60s/’70s phenomenon? Monsters of Folk is the new version for the 2000s, comprising four “new Dylans”: Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Mike Mogis and Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes, and Matt Ward, who normally operates solo as M. Ward or in his collaboration with Zooey Deschanel, She & Him. The Monsters album isn’t due until late September , but tracks have already started leaking to the Internet, and they’re a doozy.
Our fave is called, irreverently, “Dear God (Sincerely M.O.F.).” Over a funky little beat obviously created with digital technology, the Monsters anachronistically wax harmonic in ‘70s, Laurel Canyon, one-ear-covering-the-heaphones, all-around-the-microphone style like they were auditioning for a part in Almost Famous. It’s the perfect mix of styles, eras, and sonic artifacts, proving super enough indeed.
