This is the year of the eccentric U.K. chanteuse: Bat For Lashes, La Roux, Little Boots, Florence and the Machine… There are more and more everyday it seems: a generation of Brit girls seemingly grew up discovering their mom’s Kate Bush eight-tracks, and their lives (and ours) were changed forever…
Current case in point: Marina Diamandis, who goes by the nom de roq of Marina and the Diamonds. The 24-year-old has already been hailed as the “new Kate Bush” by the likes of the Guardian, and they’re not far off. Well, there are some key differences: Kate Bush was beautiful – Marina is a knockout on the level of some genetic hybrid of Jessica Alba and Catherine Zeta-Jones. And while Diamandis displays the vocally acrobatic Bushisms favored by Florence, Natasha Khan et al on the Diamonds’ intense debut single “Mowgli’s Revenge,” she displays a quacky sense of humor that one doesn’t place with Kate’s middle-earth seriousness. Indeed, while “Mowgli’s Road” is singalong catchy beyond belief, it has a downright strangeness to it that one doesn’t usually detect in an ambitious pop starlet – which is really what makes it resonant and stand out in the first place.
