Track of the Day: “Baby Don’t Stop” Lindstrom & Christabelle

Aeroplane Dub Mix

Wanna be starting somethin’ next time you’re in charge of the decks at a party? Put on “Baby Can’t Stop” by Lindstrøm & Christabelle and watch the dancefloor ignite. Lindstrøm of course is the Norwegian DJ/producer who is one of the crucial figures in bringing about the “cosmic disco” movement, but his latest project, a duo collaboration with female vocalist Christabelle, is more like disco, period.

Indeed, cleverly retrofitted nostalgia is the order of the day here on the pair’s first official single, which gets an official release today. The groove’s infectious swing evokes Quincy Jones’ effervescent productions for pre-plastic surgery Michael Jackson, a perfect structure on which to hang every sonic anachronism Lindstrøm has in his box: staccato horns, sinuous basslines, diva moans, aquaboogie vocoders, Chic-style rhythm guitars, syncopated percussion – it just don’t stop. There’s even a kind of vintage Naked Music type vibe that in recent memory might’ve sounded dated, but for some reason sounds totally fresh and clean. The fantastic remix by Aeroplane just takes what’s great about the original and just gives us more, more, more: this is discodelica for the heads and the masses. “Baby, I can’t stop – I can’t enough,” Christabelle sings on the chorus; funny – we feel the same way…
