Track of the Day: “Right Above It,” Lil Wayne featuring Drake

Can there be anything more anticipated than new Lil Wayne material? Ever since the New Orleans lyrical gangsta who’s disputably rap’s MVP got incarcerated last year, hip-hop heads (and a lot of other people, too) have been curious about what his next move would be. Well, now we know that he’s going to be dropping an e.p., appropriately titled I’m Not A Human Being, on Wayne’s birthday, September 7th, and that the track “Right Above It” is the first thing leaked from it.

“Right Above It” isn’t so much classic Lil Wayne as it is typical Lil Wayne—which puts it head and shoulders over everyone else, regardless. It follows the formula: melancholy yet uplifting Rocky horns played on a synthesizer, strange inspirational aphorisms rendered in raspy autotone, electronic handclaps, with superstar rhymes over the top. For such a known eccentric, “Right Above It” is, other than a kind of bluesy sadness, hip-hop that sounds ready made as a radio hit; it’s hardly Wayne’s most psychedelic effort, but it’s way better than his last album release, the misguided alt-rock experiment Rebirth. This is head and shoulders over most commercial hip-hop, however: both Wayne and his superstar protégé Drake flex real flows here, dipping in and around the beats with panache, even if these may not be their deepest lyrics. No, this is the sound of Lil Wayne triumphant, ready to assault the charts again, even from behind bars; it’s clear from “Right Above It” that Weezy isn’t done yet, nor is the public’s taste for him.
