When is neo-soul really just…. Soul? Alecia Chakour answers that question on “Hard Times,” a leak from her upcoming e.p. apparently of the same name. Chakour is from Brooklyn, and she’s displays that borough’s soulful grit to this cover of Curtis Mayfield’s topical R&B nugget made famous via Baby Huey’s original version and its appearance as a sample on the likes of Ghostface Killer tracks. On “Hard Times,” Chakour displays one of those huge, vintage-sounding soul voices that should make her someone to check out for fans of, say, Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones.
