Track of the Day—“Luniz vs. Joker (Kraddy Next Level Mashup)”

Urban music has become a global bazaar, as this witty mash-up by West Coast electronic-music legend Kraddy makes clear. On it, Kraddy—a founding former member of the Glitch Mob and one of the most deft proponents of forward California bass music—fuses two decidedly regional grooves: the dubstep of England and classic hip-hop from Northern California.

It’s a deft mix of new school and not quite new school. Kraddy takes the bottom-end-heavy digital funk of Bristol dubstep guru Joker (in particular, his recent “City Hopper” single) and merges it with “I Got 5 On It,” the classic 1995 hit single from Oakland rap duo Luniz. The combination proves ideal, however—even though Joker is at the forefront of futuristic dubstep, his synth heavy tracks and loping riddims evoke nothing so much as classic Dr. Dre g-funk retrofitted for a dystopian sci-fi universe; the spooky keyboard melodies from “I Got 5 On It,” meanwhile, blend effortlessly into Joker’s beats, while Luniz rappers Yukmouth and Numskull give the dubstep groove added syncopation with their deft flow, as well as a imbuing Joker’s previously instrumental track with rowdy braggadocio. It’s proof that inner-city music really is a universal language, where borders are falling every day. Kraddy himself has been known to knock down a few of those—his breakthrough hit “Android Porn” kicks like a mule for underground heads and yet has enough of an accessible, party-starting groove to be featured on mainstream shows like America’s Best Dance Crew (be on the lookout for a new Kraddy EP coming soon, by the way). Kraddy gets it—this is the sound of tomorrow, available today via his speaker-shredding hybrid theory.
