To Be Or Not To Bieber: Justin Gets Chairlifted Into Teen Dream Pop

It’s not exactly a mash-up, and it isn’t quite fan fiction… But what it is is compelling. We discovered this strange pop art mutation via the website of one of our favorite bands Holy Ghost: two indie/dream pop Noo Yawk hipster mainstays, Jorge Elbrecht (of both Violens and art collective Lansing-Dreiden) and Chairlift singer Caroline Polachek, collaborated on a song that seems have been designed to fit perfectly when played alongside superstar Justin Bieber’s “Never Let You Go” video. And when I say fit perfectly, I mean perfectly: Polachek’s vocal syncs up perfectly with Bieber’s mouth movements, so it looks like… Bieber is actually singing the song! It’s a disarming effect, but what’s even more disorienting is that a couple of totally credible indie hipsters used a Justin Bieber video as the core inspiration for creating a new song. On its own, Polachek and Elbrecht’s song itself (which may have a title but I have no idea what it is) is great—spooky shoegaze disco that floats on disembodied grooves and Polachek’s detached vocal; combined with the absurdist visual of Justin Bieber lip-synching along, however, Polachek and Elbrecht may have a created a transcendent new genre worthy of Hipster Runoff dissection: teen dream pop….
