Shangaan Electro Moves

Dancing to 180bpm’s is no easy task. A new dance phenomenon from South Africa is out to give a masterclass what looks like a high speed African jitterbug. The movement is called Shangaan Electro and a handful of videos are recently popping up promoting this style of dance and attitude.  At first glance, you think the clips are sped up to match the pace of the music, however its the other way around. A couple local producers wanted to keep up with dancers who wished for their traditional music to be made faster. In response, they came up with these lo fi electronic beats, heavy on the marimba with enough speed to surpass pretty much any jungle record out there.

Honest Johns
has just released a compilation called Shangaan Electro: New Wave Dance Music from South Africa which highlights a few of the most popular tracks of that scene.

Here’s a few videos of these open air raves. Be warn…its very hypnotising!
