Roots Maneuvers: Passion Pit and Animal Collective Tweak Their Influences

Two of today’s most buzzed about bands, Passion Pit and Animal Collective, are uniquely talented. However, their sounds also hark back to some previous outfits, which perhaps didn’t have the same cross-genre appeal, or maybe its just that those genres are being proven irrelevant these days. Regardless, its fun to explore the obvious overlap, and maybe to find the source of their individual influences.

Passion Pit has made one of the albums of the year with its debut Manners – just check out their single “The Reeling”:

Indeed, “The Reeling” proves an instant classic indie-rock meets electronica fusion. Making it even more so, it cleverly tweaks PP’s influences, in particular paying homage to innovators from a previous rave era, Underworld – in particular, the U.K. dance avatars’ 2002 track “Two Months Off”:

Animal Collective, also responsible for one of the best albums in recent memory, Merriweather Post Pavilion, also works a rock/pop/electronic fusion par excellence…

…. that also pays seeming sonic tribute to a dance-music chestnut from a previous era, Jamie Principle’s 1985-vintage house smash “Your Love”:
