Increasingly desperate record companies are presently in the midst of a search for a “new MGMT” – and as ludicrous as that mission may be, they might have found it in Amazing Baby. Like all cool bands trafficking in the area of neo-psychedelic-electronic-shoegaze-folk-whatever (Yeasayer and, er, MGMT, et al), Amazing Baby hail from Brooklyn. In fact, making the comparison that much more disgustingly perfect, AB co-founder Simon O’Connor, shared a dorm room in his undergraduate years with Ben Goldwasser of MGMT. But on its new debut album Rewild, Amazing Baby find their own vibe amidst a myriad of surprising influences. The beautiful epic ballad “Dead Light” evokes classic Pulp than the new Jarvis Cocker album – that is, if Jarvis composed his songs on a satellite orbiting Saturn; “Headdress,” meanwhile, suggests Elvis Costello if he ever got his shoegaze on. But while there are elements of The Flaming Lips’ sci-fi phantasmagoria and the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink sonics of Sandinista-era Clash, Amazing Baby create their own sound out of distinctively lush harmonies and spiraling guitar webs that prove addictive. As such, don’t be surprised if you put Rewild on constant rewind…
