Comedy and indie rock make such strange but perfect bedfellows, but they’re bedfellows nonetheless. Lately every cool comedian seems to be the pet of some cool indie band, and vice versa. But its not just the lower-tier funnypeople who we’re seeing at Arcade Fire shows – it’s, like, dudes that are in Ratatouille and lay-deez who are in hit shows like The Office. Below, we break down the kings and queens of comedy who don’t front when it comes to getting their indie on:
Aziz Ansari
How indie is Aziz Ansari? Well the Human Giant co-creator/Parks and Recreation star not only had memorable roles in Flight of the Concords, but he’s also BFFs with James Murphy and LCD Soundsystem, with whom he recently went with on a pleasure vacay to Japan. Ansari was also spotted in the audience at an L.A. Julian Casablancas show, and was chosen to interview Animal Collective for Fader. Pretty much, Ansari couldn’t get more indie unless he joined Grizzly Bear (come to think of it, that’s not a bad idea…).
Patton Oswalt:
Yeah, he got freaky as a rat obsessed with eggplant in smash kid flick Ratatouille, and he was on the massively popular prole comedy TV show Kings of Queens. But despite his mainstram success, Oswalt’s indie to his core. He releases stand-up albums on Sub Pop, yo, appeared with Sleater-Kinney and Jawbreaker on the Rock Against Busch CD, and his Comedians Of Comedy posse are more likely to play the place that Sebadoh just jammed than where Michael Richards drops racial jokes. But the truth is in Oswalt’s iPod, which jams econo to obscure Brit garage rock, punk nuggets, and Yo La Tengo. More at A.V. Club.
David Cross:
David Cross is, like, the original indie-rock comedy dude! Like Oswalt, Mr. “Mr. Show” also releases albums on Sub Pop. As well, he is not only on record as a Pitchfork reader, but even invents imaginary albums to listen to when reading the reviews! His true indie cred stems, however, from his recidivist video-cameo appearances, having appeared in clips for The Strokes (“Juicebox”), Superchunk (“Watery Hands”), and Yo La Tengo (“Sugarcube”).
Fred Armisen:
Fred Armisen isn’t just a comedian with a jones for indie rock: he’s actually been an indie-rock musician before Saturday Night Live came calling, having played drums with ‘90s Chicago neo-post-punk Trenchmouth. Even since he’s been an SNL cast member, he played with David Shouse (Grifters) and Steven Drozd (Flaming Lips) in Those Bastard Souls and appears on Les Savy Fav’s 2007 album Let’s Stay Friends. He also has been the gateway drug for Carrie Brownstein’s transition from indie rock to comedy, having formed the viral sketch video duo Thunderant with the former Sleater-Kinney singer-guitarist.

Mindy Kaling
She who plays Kelly Kapoor on The Office is an on-the-record Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, M.I.A., and Nada Surf fan. As well, according to a SPIN magazine interview, while she may knock boots to Flo Rida (who doesn’t, really?) her dream concert would be Jenny Lewis and Liz Phair. Doesn’t get more indie than that, does it?
