Dancehall Days: Bobby Konders – Respect!

Dancehall is everywhere in pop culture these days, ever since Major Lazer made one of the most righteous albums of 2009, and South Rakkas Crew put their riddim magic down on Tricky and others. But we can’t forget those who’ve been holding down dancehall for a minute – for example, Bobby Konders, NYC’s own dancehall don, who is one of the key figures to bring dancehall into the hip-hop consciousness.

New Yorkers know how this beloved DJ/producer gets down: every Sunday, they check out Konders’ “On Da Reggae Tip” show on Hot 97 (one of the first places Stateside to hear the likes of Sean Paul and Elephant Man) or rock to his Massive B Sound System during Brooklyn’s West Indian Day Parade every Labor Day. On wax, Konders’ production skills can be found on his own recordings as well as those from legends like Buju Banton, Ninjaman, Shabba Ranks, Supercat and more. Now Konders is finally getting the respect he so deserves in a great new Current short documentary, “The Bobby Konders Story,” which goes deep into the man behind the music, as well as the authentic locales and environments that give dancehall its flavor. The doc ultimately makes clear that, when it comes to pure fire dubplate action, nobody deserves a rewind like Bobby Konders. Selecta!
