Well it’s no real surprise that the Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards event this past Saturday was an absolute sensation ! Some of the winners were a charming suprise as were the many incredible performances and collaborations – from the opening drum invocation from legend Steve Reid to Jose James with Christian Prommer’s Drumlesson to Rob Galiano and Bembe Segue as 2banksof4 together with Shuya Okino. I knew Tawiah was good but when she went in a Radiohead meets nu-ravey soul direction I was floored.

So the WWA winners go a little something like this : Jazz Album of the Year – Robert Glasper ‘In My Element’, Lifetime Achievement – Steve Reid, Album of The Year – Theo Parrish ‘Sound Sculptures Vol. 1’, Track of the Year – Benga & Coki ‘Night’, BBC introducing… Award – Tawiah and Best Maida Vale Session – The Cinematic Orchestra.
