Running to Chillwave: ‘Waved Out’ Los Angeles, March 27th

You may have heard the term before on these pages, or on a myriad of new media outlets, but “Chillwave” a kind of snarky term that describes (loosely) a large collection of indie artists from all over that share a common sensibility. The New York Times even used it surrounding last week’s SXSW…

Mary Anne Hobbs Hits LA September 23

As we’ve written about many times here on Kspace, the post hip-hop faction coming out of Cali has gone worldwide over the course of the past year. The honorable ambassador is the UK’s Radio One DJ Mary Anne Hobbs, who is singularly responsible for introducing the LA players to their UK and European counterparts. New Vintage Classic: Gil Scott-Heron’s Comeback – The Revolution Will Be Tweeted

Music needs events, and a Gil Scott-Heron comeback, while not on the scale of a new Jay-Z album, is definitely a welcome one. In fact, Jay-Z wouldn’t exist without Scott-Heron, who arguably helped create rap with his groundbreaking track from 1970, “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.” Scott-Heron’s soulful spoken-word style, outspoken lyrics, jazzy flow and funky percussion created a foundation for hip-hop; his combination of political poetry and rhythm influenced everyone from Chuck D to KRS-One, and he’s even collaborated with rappers like Blackalicious.

Quantic’s new Cali project

yeah we did say that we were going more Cali centric (probably meant California) but here’s a project that Quantic has just completed out of Cali Colombia that well deserves many mentions. Live: Juan McLean and The Field @ The Glass House, Pomona CA

Woe to anyone in Southern California who tries to put on any sort of non-basketball related event on the night of a Lakers game during the finals. Even the electronic-music nerds couldn’t tear themselves away from the Lakers crushing Orlando Magic 100-75, as was evident to The Field playing to 30 people exactly (yes, I counted) last night at the Glass House in Pomona. Come all the way from Sweden for this?

Wynton Marsalis on the Rhythms of Basketball and Jazz

Anyone who knows basketball and jazz can see the relationship between the two pursuits: a marriage of form and improvisation, of individualism with teamwork; a primacy of rhythm (it’s all about tempo); and a requirement that players respond to one another’s choices and to rapidly changing situations in real time. Just as Kareem Abdul-Jabar was famous for listening to artists like Sonny Rollins…
