How serendipitous that over the weekend I would be treated to a show by Ariel Pink (and Os Mutantes, who are a vision of sincerity and studious virtuosity not to be missed) at Minneapolis’ Cedar Cultural Center, only to be doubly treated this Monday morning, and able to share, this insane video by two professional nutters: Wayne Coyne and Ariel Pink (who demanded a beer from the stage on Saturday night “for my pills”).

The grainy, iPhone-shot mess begins with Coyne explaining that the buttery, viscous liquid he’s joshing around with is crowdsourced breast milk that Mr. Pink had politely asked for over the course of a few days.

The song is one of Ariel Pink’s most accessible, complete with the anthemic, big-pointed chorus and mildly melancholym, broad pop strokes.

Arcade Fire gets the Spike Jonze treatment in their new video for “The Suburbs” – his first for the band after their close collaboration on Where the Wild Things Are.

Things are grim in Pomona. Or Kansas City, or Golden Valley.

Arcade Fire gets the Spike Jonze treatment in their new video for “The Suburbs” – his first for the band after their close collaboration on Where the Wild Things Are.

In a summertime suburb, teenagers cope with a transitionally-dystopian reality as best they can; with bikes and smiles and idle wiles and Eskimo kisses. Of course, as befits Arcade Fire’s not-terribly-subtle subtext of authenticity opinings and Spike Jonze’s lens of wide-eyed child ruination things aren’t long for balance.

Beautifully shot, with a cashmere-tender treatment of its subjects’ tightwire walk, Spike Jonze and Arcade Fire aim and hit the place right between your brain and your heart: that lump in your throat.

Bonus points for spotting the Regine and Win cameo.

Gruff Rhys, the Welsh and slightly unhinged front man of the Super Furry Animals is flying high off the back of his debut film Separado – a psychedelic Western musical charting the history of a community of Welsh exiles in Patagonia – with ‘Shark Ridden Waters’, the tasty first track from his forthcoming album. The record has been produced by vinyl hoarder extraordinaire Andy Votel and sounds like a shimmery psychedelic pop ballad torn out of the Brian Wilson book of production. Not only can you pick it up, but more to the point you really should go and pick it up right here for free, or alternatively you can search out the 12”vinyl in your local record store. The video, a homage to Jean-Luc Godard, features a suitably capricious waif, played by actress Roxane Mesquida, who’d make any warm-blooded male risk shark-ridden waters for her understated charms.

Released on Halloween last Sunday, Jimmy McMillan’s video for his preternaturally viral “Rent Is Too Damn High” campaign (of sorts) is exactly what you’d expect from the proprietor of a website so awful and shameless it leaves you cross-eyed and speechless. Seriously, look at this thing.

Although Mr. McMillan has made himself temporarily famous for his militant stance on the issue of New York gentrification, he himself hasn’t paid rent in like a decade; he gets by doing maintenance work around the building in exchange for living rent-free. So the rent really isn’t that damn high. A showboat by any other name (like ‘candidate’)…

And yes, the rent is fucking high – the average price for a studio apartment in Harlem is $1,342 – but most New Yorkers would politely tell you to just move, then.

I can’t imagine there are too many Palestinian-Filipino multi-instrumentalists out there playing a cross between rock n’ roll and Memphis soul, so you could say Hanni El Khatib has somewhat of monopoly on his style. We definitely can’t get enough of his first single, ‘Dead Wrong’ and can’t wait for the album to drop later this year. By day, Hanni El Khatib is creative director at HUF in San Francisco and the video for ‘Dead Wrong’ stitches together footage of 1960s America – the varsity jackets, the soft-pack cigarettes, the Cadillacs and the rockabilly haircuts – to create a punchy visual counterpoint to this retro-nuevo sound.

Brilliantly directed by Dugan O’Neil, the “Cloudlight’ video becomes a magical other world, a surprisingly melancholic and stirring vision for a song that works both in the heart and on the dance floor.

How to describe the sound of Eskmo, the nom du beats of West Coast electronic-music don Brendan Angelides? Well, Bleep.com termed the Eskmo groove “Masterfully produced… sophisticated, post-Dilla hip-hop funk“; indeed, there are elements of dubstep, glitch, IDM as well, but the way all the elements come together is strictly… Eskmo.

What makes Eskmo stand out among his low-end bumpin’ brethren is that what he creates are not mere tracks or beats, but actual songs—emotional but not emo, soulful but creating a new, futuristic vision of soul. This is most clear in “Cloudlight,” the standout track from his recent full-length album on legendary electronic-music label Ninja Tune. Apt to its title, “Cloudlight” shimmers and wavers like the breaking dawn, booming out of the speakers with tremulous bass, yet also dropping sonic surprises—in particular, Eskmo’s haunting vocal, which evokes more a moody Mark Lanegan ballad than, say, anything with a vocoder. There’s a lot of meaning here, which becomes clear in the video for “Cloudlight,” a simple yet innovative narrative that highlights the song’s moving content. Brilliantly directed by Dugan O’Neil, the “Cloudlight’ video becomes a magical other world, a surprisingly melancholic and stirring vision for a song that works both in the heart and on the dance floor.

The Pattern+Grid World EP sounds very much that: the subtleties, density, and pressed-eyelids Mandelbrots Steven Ellison diagrams sound as lovely as they are disconcerting and the very same applies to his new video for “Kill Your Co-Workers.” A street scene of candy-coated youngsters and benevolent robots turns into a massacre we all know is inevitable for real. We can’t trust them, and they hate us.

In this promo for their single Bop, a classical techno workout somewhere between Steve Reich and The Martian, this Berlin trio known as Brandt Brauer Frick are styled as Teutonic jazz-bots. It’s vaguely reminiscent of the Kraftwerk video for The Robots, but involves 11 musicians, each assigned a track (kick, bass, hi-hat, rainmaker, moog, piano etc.). The track could have been made by one man on a computer, but instead inverts the logic of Fordist production. Why use one person and a MacBook when you can use eleven musicians and a bunch of instruments? Why indeed.

The new video by El Guincho has been blogged and reblogged by some of the biggest in the business in the course of the past 24 hour. As proof that the blogosphere is a parasitic, self-replicating beast of little intelligence but voracious
appetite for cultural detritus, we thought we’d survey what they had to say about it.

Consensus seems to be that the video is crazy. ‘The video is absolutely nuts’, says one blogger, ‘goes on a trip’ says another, ‘is fucking crazy’ says a third, and features women ‘doing crazy things’ adds a fourth. If you haven’t already got the picture, it is also ‘surreal’ (obviously this fifth blogger has a degree in the arts because he/she goes on to talk about the ‘transgressive, sublime and just plain nutty imagery’ in the video).

There is also an agreement that the video is NSFW: ‘probably NSFW’, ‘definitely NSFW’, or putting it another way, you should ‘be forewarned if you’re watching this in the office.’ We even get a confession from one blogger: “I’ve become more and more fascinated by NSFW material (I’m not even what would one call a porn aficionado).” [We’re not sure we really care.]

And why is it NSFW? Because of ‘naked girls’ says one, ‘lots of boobs’ says another, ‘a ton of boobs’ says a third, and a fourth adds: ‘painted breasts, breasts with sparklers, breasts with guns’. Now we’re interested! So watch this crazy video with lots of tits. Oh, and the new album by El Guincho is out now – that’s what these tits are really trying to tell you.

Please check out this young man’s flow. 20 year-old Delvin is East London’s most promising MC since Dizzie and Wiley. The big statement comes from a big feeling that Devlin will be MASSIVE by this time next year. Some will say Devlin’s grime wordplay shows resemblance to a young Marshall Mathers – complex and clever. Venturing his lyrics past traditional grime tales, Devlin raps more about politics, conspiracy theories, and a way through. The run up single to his debut album “Bud, Sweat, and Beers” (November 1) features the lovely vocals of celebrity DJ Yasmin. The dark undertone of “Runaway” is captured beautifully in this video, on the set of his old manor – Dagenham, Essex.

There’s little doubting that Massive Attack have been a big influence on James Lavelle’s approach to the music business, whether adopting their stencil aesthetic for his Mo’ Wax label, or enlisting A-list part-time collaborators on his UNKLE albums. So it’s no surprise that this new hi-def UNKLE video, directed by John Hillcoat (The Road) and starring hard-nut actor and East Londoner Ray Winstone reminds us of none other than Massive Attack’s recent forays into video such as ‘Paradise Circus’, a mini-documentary about 70s porn star Georgia Spelvin, and ‘Saturday Come Slow’, a political piece about noise torture. In another overlap, the video for Massive Attack’s ‘Karma Coma’ was directed by Jonathan Glazier, whose big break came in 2000 with the feature film Sexy Beast about a retired robber in the Costa Del Sol, played by, you guessed it, Ray Winstone.

Tricky boxes back into our world with a rugged new single “Murder Weapon.” The video was shot in Paris, where he now lives. It follows an agile boxer training for the fight of his life -literally. The menacing undertone of the song (a rework Echo Minott’s dancehall track) sets the story up in the same way a film uses a score to build up a climatic scene. It’s dark and absolute. What else is there to expect from Tricky?!

The new album Mixed Race is out on September 27th in the UK and October 5th in the States on Domino Records.

There’s no disputing that Ricky Powell was there at the golden age of hip-hop – he’s got the photos to prove it, tons of them, and a few stories to tell as well. From Public Enemy to Doze Green to Run DMC to Basquiat, he shot them all – and when he went on the road with the Beastie Boys in 1987, he soon became the unofficial Def Jam photographer. His close affiliation with the Beastie’s saw him christened the fourth Beastie, and in the early 90s he earned himself a cable access show called Rappin’ With The Rickster. VHS recordings of the shows were circulated between friends like hard currency, and it’s these VHS recordings that have been restored to DVD for this newly released Rappin’ With the Rickster DVD (courtesy of NY connoisseurs, Five Day Weekend). Ricky gets up close and personal with, amongst others, Sophia Coppola, a very young Larry Fishburne and Run-D.M.C. It’s vintage NYC and Ricky is the most unpredictable of interviewers, smoking weed on camera and generally behaving badly. Here’s a sneak preview of Ricky with Cey Adams, Adam Horovitz and Ione Skye from 1990.

We’ve already hipped you to how cool Old Style Guitars is, and how rad it was that indie-band-with-integrity-of-the-moment The National played an intimate, secret show there for the shop’s grand opening. The thrill of seeing The National play in the sunshine on a loading dock with just thirty-forty Silverlake hipsters in attendance was a hard-to-believe moment… But now there’s proof!

This video on YouTube captured the event’s essence with iPhon cinema-verité élan. It features The National playing their biggest hit, the Barack-candidacy classic “Fake Empire,” with intense, stripped-down delicacy and, believe it or not, humor. “This is the Dave Matthews version,” they exclaim from the makeshift stage when the gee-tars just get a little too jazzbo, and it’s a perfect moment, one that pretty much encapsulates the entire experience of being there.

It’s difficult not to be seduced by these images of innocent teenage romance from director Tyrone Lebon, who was commissioned by Mount Kimbie to create a visual score for ‘Would Know’, the first single off their hyped debut album, called Crooks and Lovers.

Mount Kimbie, if you haven’t heard of them already, make the sort of ambient post-dubstep ravescapes, a bit like Burial on a see-saw with Alva Noto, and have picked up remix duties for The xx track ‘Basic Space’ as well as notable mentions from Mary Anne Hobbs, Ramadanman and Untold, if that helps you place them. Their album, for Scuba’s Hot Flush label, has been getting all the right people hot and flustered, so why don’t you own a copy yet?

But let’s also shine some light on Tyrone Lebon, the video director (also responsible for Mount Kimbie’s album artwork) who shot this video on a VHS camcorder, then transferred the tape and scratched and drew and shaded and generally messed up the negatives. It’s a killer look, though we’re not too sure about the wardrobe – what’s with those matching pyjamas daubed in Nazi Swastikas? Or is that the Hindu peace sign?

M.I.A’s video for “Born Free” is notable for so many things—for one, it hybrids Robert Capa’s photography, Antonioni’s Zabriskie Point, and Brian DePalma’s The Fury. Or the kinetic handheld zooms that exude a ‘70s vintage that recalls the work of director Romain Gavras’ father, the iconoclastic film director Costas Gavras. Or the song’s simultaneous evoking of Atari Teenage Riot, X-Ray Spex, and Suicide (whose “Ghost Rider,” itself both a polemic against and celebration of America, is memorably sampled). Okay, that’s not really why people are talking about it. Okay, “Born Free” has proven controversial already, largely due to its graphic nudity and limb-exploding violence. But where it proves truly incisive and genius is in how it plays on societal prejudices against redheads.

Redheads, you say? Yes, redheads, gingers, and so forth. Copper hair has long been unfairly associated with bad tempers, sexual deviance, poor quality genetic stock and geekiness (in the U.K., a “ginger minger” is a socially inept, not-too-swift uber-nerd); the combination of green eyes and a Titian mane was said to be the mark of a werewolf or vampire! (I, the author, have both red hair and green eyes—proceed at your own risk.) Through history, redheads have been burned as witches. A Canadian teen even started a Facebook group promoting “Kick A Ginger Day”, itself inspired by, naturally, a South Park episode (Yes, the majority of these facts have been bogarted from Wikipedia—but they’re true!)

Indeed, gingerphobia indeed has been having a strange upsurge of late. In addition to M.I.A’s video, Newish Pitchfork-anointed indie rockers Twin Sister have a lyric that states “ginger kids can be very violent.” Ouch! Noted pacifist Noel Gallagher, meanwhile, recently dissed Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine for the color of her hair: “I’m not having someone with ginger hair making music. I’m not going down that road,” he noted with great sensitivity. (The erstwhile Oasis singer may reconsider getting drunk in a Scottish bar anytime soon—while redheads make up only one percent of the world’s population, they verge on thirty percent in Scotland).

It’s a real prejudice, yet compared to the experiences of other marginalized ethnic and political groups, it seems kinda lame. Therefore M.I.A’s genius: by highlighting prejudice against the whitest people in the world, the “Born Free” video is, ya know, drawing attention to the unfairness of prejudice in general. I know—heavy; okay, maybe it’s not so subtle—even the kid that gets his blown off in the clip gets the symbolism. Now, if only she’d cast Flying Tomato Shaun White as the rebel redheads’ ringleader, and maybe Karen Elson in a Linda Hamilton/Terminator type role, then maybe the crimson revolution would be televised after all…
