est voila ! we’re delighted to have DJ LeFtO back with us for an exclusive KSPACE.TV 66 Mix and May Day special as he travels to join us in California for some crackin’ DJ sets in early May (will post them soon). If in Europe you can catch LeFtO in his hometown Brussels on his radio show, live in clubs and with the ‘Friends and Family’ (recently Rich Medina in the area), as well as in London often with Gilles and the Brownswood crew and those (like me) lucky enough to be at the annual Worldwide Festival in Sete, France early July. Here’s what LeFtO says about his new mix – enjoy !

Long time no mix here on KSPACE, glad I found some time to share some brand new tracks with you guys; start the mix with a session of Miguel Atwood-Ferguson’s tribute to Dilla “Suite For Ma Dukes” playing the beautiful “Untitled/Fantastic” joint; make sure to buy the 3-box dvd set from Mochilla, it’s splendid. From Cleveland here’s Keyel, great rap music the way I like it and this one produced by my homeboy Flako. The Prosoulytes, a nice Parisian trio and Truthlive, who’s album got entirely produced by Jake One, not bad!

Salute to Rich Medina and LeFtO on recent Brussels visit

Kenny Graham playing Moondog music? Yes, and it’s incredible. Onra is back with new music and a super atmospheric track by Nosaj Thing, amazing. Malcolm McLaren and Gangstarr tracks, you know why and a new subliminal track coming from the Ninja Tune camp by Mr.Scruff called “Almeida Spider”, probably a bad experience on holiday. Uptempo rhythms by Girl Unit on Night Slugz, it’s the latest on that label, a great Ramadanman & Midland track on Aus Music, Jesse Rose flipped Marvin Gaye nicely and finally ending with Sandra St. Victor’s “Cosmos” remixed by Souled.

Enjoy the music…

Whatever happened to drum and bass? So many d&b stalwarts have started making dubstep, and DJ Zinc has lately been spinning straight 4/4 beats he calls “crack house.” Well, Camo UFOs is ridin’ in like the cavalry to make drum and bass fun again—heck, the crazy sounds they’re making actually sound more like d&b’s original name, “jungle.”

Camo UFOs is two dudes, (thee) Mike B and Nate Day. (thee) Mike B is one of the funkiest dudes around—if you’ve gone out in the Los Angeles area in the last few years (or Helsinki—dude is mad large in Helsinki, for reals), you’ve heard him spin at the best spots: he was resident, for example, at the late, great DJ AM’s legendary Banana Split party from jump. Nate Day, meanwhile, hightailed it from Philadelphia to El Lay to bring some City of Brotherly Love groove sauce to the City of Angels. Together as Camo UFOs, they prove a truly dynamic duo: on their remixes for Major Lazer’s “Pon De Floor” and Count and Sinden’s “Mega,” B and Day bring the same post-modern rude bwoy lunacy to d&b/jungle that Major Lazer did to dancehall, reinvigorating it in the process. In Camo UFO’s hands, d&b sounds totally current, yet teems with the kind of try-anything braggodocio that, say, Aphrodite had when he used to make jump-up tracks with the Jungle Brothers. Camo UFOs is all about skittering breakbeats going nuts and video game synths taking over the world, and it’s just a dubplate good time. That’s clear from their new mixtape, which they’re giving away free here. It traces the rude roots of the Camo UFOs sound, combining genre classics with their slamming remixes. And Camo UFOs don’t just make dope music—they also have cool swag. If you see them out DJing somewhere, hit ‘em up for a Camo-branded lighter! Rewind!

The latest Exclusive 66 Mix just in from our good friend DJ LeFtO chilled and chillin’ in the Northern shores (Belgium that is). If in that area anytime be sure to check for his gigs and tune in to his superb Radio show. Here’s what LeFtO has to say about his January 010 66 Mix – respect !
(check for this mix below and with all other 66 Mixes in the jukebox)

Glad i’m back on KSPACE.TV for another mix, the first of 2010. Gil Scott-Heron is probably the best way to open this mix, this track features on his forthcoming album on XL Recordings “I’m new here” and I must thank Gilles for giving me the chance to play some of that in advance. Another great piece of music comes from Jay Electronica who’s connecting with Just Blaze the megatrondon for a subliminal joint; the original sample follows right after, Billy Stewart whose track “Cross My Heart” was also sampled by Exile on his album “Radio”. Then comes a singer that reminds me of D’Angelo and I’m sure you won’t disagree, AB is working with many new talented producers as 14KT or Black Milk and I’m sure we’ll hear more of him in twenty ten. New music from the Whitefield Brothers on Egon’s imprint Now Again and House Shoes comes hard on the first record the famous L.A. club The Do-Over released on their label.

Other fresh flavors come from MED aka Medaphoar, ow and watch out for my homeboy Grooveman Spot who will be releasing in a couple months another album on Jazzysport, this track is powerful and has to be played on a high volume. Seiji’s music is always in my crate and this remix he did for Slacker is just unbelievable; the first time I heard this track was at Simbad’s studio and I started laughing, so ridiculously powerful it was…imagine that track on a big soundsystem, it’s a winner!!! More music comes from Skream remixing Instra:mental, Africa Hi Tech and a Simbad production for Donn T, yes ?uestlove’s sister is a talented singer… To end with some uptempo bangers à la DVA on Hyperdub, Joy Orbison’s latest joint, Geeneus’ club banger and a big big tune by Floating Points on Eglo that is …
Be my guest and enjoy the music:

Kickin’ off the Next 10 big ones, we’re psyched to present the latest Exclusive KSPACE.TV 66 Mix direct from HomeBaseNYC a whole lotta goodness made up of a party, live music showcase, internet radio show, mix series and blog site based in NYC.

HomeBase began two years ago when New York creative director LEE met a young promoter named Alice Wonderland while the two were working out of the Harlem loft offices of Digiwaxx Media. Although coming from two different generations the two shared a desire to inject some new life in the city’s party circuit. Coming out of the downtown 90’s scene, LEE wanted to bring back the energy and spirit he had found at parties like Giant Step and Sweet Thing at New Music Cafe, where championing diverse sounds, a fly crowd of dancers and a touch of class were the order of the day. Wonderland was looking to create a night for her generation to hear new music free’d from the constraints and hang-ups of what was now considered a hip-hop party in the city.

When they met a young DJ from Queens named GetLive! they found their creative partner in someone who possesed the New York party rocking energy and a fearlessness towards breaking new records – at time when most DJ’s are embracing the safety and status quo that Serato provides. They christened their new movement HomeBaseNYC as a tribute to a legendary Manhattan club from the 80’s and as a mission statement towards providing a space for their progressive scene to call home. Two years later the three continue to push the vision as they share the responsiblities of shaping the music direction, promoting and marketing events and building their unique community of DJ’s, producers, artists and dancers.

“Good to see Shuanise coming out with more stuff, this young lady is signed to Eglo Records and is definitely a singer to look out for in 2010. Blue Daisy is certainly also someone you need to check, his Ep is out now on Black Acre Records and it’s a sure shot, like J-Rocc’s secondhand Sureshots’ record. Glad to hear Jake One productions and to know Jake is producing Freeway’s new album is a good thing, looking forward. Lately, Waajeed hit me up and asked me if I had this remix of Mayer he did, said “No, I’m sorry” haha, thanks for the joint Jeedo. Of course a lotta L.A cats on this mix, Thes One of course with the People Under The Stairs, a J-Rocc remix for Shafiq Husayn, a sick Hud Mo mix for the Italians called Crookers. Then we go loud with Harry Craze, a new 12″ out on Deep Medi Musik, a new Reso, definitely one I was looking for, he’s so hard sometimes, and the HD4000 record, it’s a monster!!! Uptempo stuff by Joy Orbison who remixes Four Tet’s “Love Cry”, Untold remixed by Pangaea, really good record, Martyn laced me with this joint on 3024 and can’t forget this classic guy DJ Nature on Jazzy Sport. Then I go boom boom, on the house tip with Hunee, great record but the one I’m really pushing now is Roman Rauch, he’s from Vienna and I love what he does…please spread the word for him, he’s worth it. To end with Raah Project from Australia and drum n bass master Calibre… I hope you’ll like it. Enjoy!”

Playlist:
Shuanise: Kingdom (Eglo)

When a podcast starts off with Todd Rundgren “Bleeding” and breaks in the middle with Lil Wayne, you know you are in for one eclectic ride. Kwes has put together an Exclusive 66 “Bokkle” Mix for KSPACE.TV brewed with the strongest elements of progressive rock, grime, surf, and British pop. Ahhh… just the right cuppa! Judging from his track listing, you start to gain a better understanding on his influences when he makes beats and re-edits for artists such as the XX, Michachu, and Jack Penate. When a 22 year old from South London throws Tom Waits into a mix, he will forever be a mixtape hero of mine. Bokkle on!

Brownswood is particularly messy at the moment, probably because Gilles just got back from gigs in Japan and so there’s been a mountain of promos building up which he has now unleashed on the office. This 66 Mix was conceived one afternoon rooting around on the floor, under the table, in the kitchen, in the lounge and even in the studio. Nuggets were unearthed – among them some obscure (and most likely unreleased) re-edits, a couple of distinctly underrated joints from Vaceo and Mpho and a handful of classic remixes from Hefner, Domu, Matthew Herbert (in his Dr Rockit guise). When you’re consistently beaten about the head with brand new music, it’s quite nice to go back to some well-loved tracks from the recent past.

We hope you enjoy this mix as much as we enjoyed arguing about the tracklisting.

1. De La Soul – Pease Porridge
2. Jay-Z – December 4th (Dharma One Blend)
3. Marvin Gaye – Sexual Healing (Marc Mac Rerub)
4. Vaceo – Shine Y’Light
5. Mpho Skeef – Like You Don’t Know
6. The Rebirth – This Journey In
7. R Kelly – Happy People (Blend’s Reedit)
8. The Soul Disciple – Boom Bangin’
9. Fred Everything – Elevate (Maurice Fulton Mix)
10. Cybophonia – Cut N Paste (Hefner Mix)
11. Unforscene feat. Alice Russell – Don’t You Worry (Domu Remix)
12. LOWD feat. Kim Hill – Saturday
13. Jazzanova – Another Fine Day (Dr Rockit’s Vocal Itch)
14. Black Joy – Untitled
15. Sir Raymond Mang – No.1
16. Chocolat – Livin’ In The City

It’s been a few weeks already since our good friend LeFtO was in town spinning at the Do Over and Low End Theory and taking a well deserved break from his radio show, club gigs, filming, blogging and promoting up on the Northern seas (of Europe that is). To fill in the gap until his next visit, he’s just graced us with another Exclusive 66 Mix for KSPACE.TV filled with a dazzling blend of the Classic and the new. Here’s what he has to say ’bout the mix:

I start the mix with Emanative, a nice producer on the Futuristica label, a perfect song that reminds me of Roy Ayers’s “Everybody Loves The Sunshine”, well, at least the beginning of the tune. Mixed Nat King Cole’s “Pick Up” track from his Re:Generations album, a track produced by Just Blaze, really?!!! An exclusive track from Kid Swing that I got from the label boss, merci Pablo! Fashawn is my favorite emcee at the moment, produced by L.A.’s Exile it’s a summer tune. Flako is definitely one of my favorite European producers, he’s from Berlin and makes incredible stuff, solo or with his group called Damage Is Done. What to say about Alice Russell ? This is a new project called “Pot Of Gold” and features a lotta remixes, this one from Yellowtail is one of my favorite tracks at the moment, same goes out to the beautiful voices of Melody Gardot and Gretchen Parlato, amazing. New Zealand’s Julien Dyne is definitely someone you need check, his album “Pins & Digits” out on BBE is simply beautiful, nice arrangements and great atmosphere, buy it eyes closed. Mark (de Clive-Lowe) sent me this project he did with Dutchman Rob Van De Wouw, very interesting record, recorded in the countryside somewhere in the Netherlands, and as always it does not dissapoint !

Another favo is definitely Debruit’s “Nigerian What?”, it’s like African modern beats with a typical UK sound, very interesting. Rockwell is another one like that, dropped from the sky it landed on my turntables and it’s here to stay, starts slow ends fast… wow! A few other gems on there but Four Tet’s “our bells” is the best thing to end a mix with.

Enjoy the 66 mix, KSPACE for Prez !

Tracklisting:
Emanative: When On Earth – Rapson Remix (Futuristica)
Nat King Cole: Pick Up (Capitol Records)
Fashawn: Lupita (White)
Flako: Do You (Kwatso)
Alice Russell: Loved – Yellowtail remix (Tru Thoughts)
Funktional J: J’s Soulfood (White)
Elaquent: Gobstopper (White)
Sabrina Malheiros: Brisa Mar -Nicola Conte Re-work (Far Out)

We’re happy to get our Exclusive 66 Mixes from Gilles and the extended family whenever they are available, what with GP living up to his Worldwide moniker at every turn, now on his way for a series of gigs in Singapore and Japan. We’re looking forward to his ‘Sportswide’ report on Sumo wrestling from there so stay tuned and a reminder that his excellent Havana Cultura release (check the minimix in the jukey) is out soon on Brownswood Oct 29 – So all that’s left to do now is to Pop open our jukebox and give a listen.

Been rummaging around a lot recently as I’m compiling a new compilation for BBE celebrating 10 years of Worldwide. Consequently, there’s a bunch of of random ones in here from days gone by as well as a couple of new gems from Dam Funk and Zed Bias. Had to dig out one of my favourite Bugge Wesseltoft grooves after his performance at Ronnie Scott’s in London with Henrik Schwarz a few weeks ago. I’m also finding the UK Funky sound really intriguing right now – part-Afro, part-MAW, part-grime – and it’s making me go back and revisit some older joints. Masters At Work remixing Grooverider – what a tune ! And Afronaught rerubbing Alison David – Wow ! Then it’s into some deeper, four-to-the-floor business, topped off with an underground classic from Classen Collective. Enjoy ! GP

Worldwide don Gilles Peterson took a 66 minute break from his hectic globetrottin’ schedule and preparing the upcoming Oct 29 Havana Cultura release (check the minimix in the jukey) to bring us the latest Exclusive 66 Mix ! so please do check in on our jukebox to the right, pop it open and give a listen. Be sure also to check in on Gilles’ almost weekly GP Sportswide posts waxing sportily about his favorite pastimes and love of the GAME !

Well well, kicking off with a little Slum Village double – check the remix from Alex B! A little Dilla-esque joint from my new ‘Havana Cultura’ album courtesy of rap duo Obsesion with something sweet from Owusu & Hannibal to follow. Digging deep for the 4hero remix by Hefner, something a bit special from Swell Session and Mark de Clive-Lowe featuring the gorgeous vocals of Anni Elif, and a little reminder of how good Portishead were too – those drums!! Martyn, Ramadanman (aka Pearson Sound) and Pangaea have all consistently delivered the goods for me this year, but what about the forerunners – Phuturistix with a stone cold 2-step classic and a little forgotten nugget from Shur-I-Kan – sounding fresher than ever today! Oh and some kid called Joy Orbison who’s straight killing it right now – huge tune for me alongside ‘Hyph Mngo’. Did I forget anyone? Oh only a cheeky session from the mighty Henrik, Kuniyuki and Yoshihiro rounding things off in some style. There you go then. Some old gems that I’d forgotten about and some new cats bringing that Detroit, funky, Afro, dubstep fusion. All killer, no filler! You know how I do.

Recent other Exclusive 66 Mixes can also be found in the Jukebox from Lefto and Gilles with more to come for Toshio Matsuura, Simbad, the BPM.

enjoy

We now have our first 2 Exclusive 66 Mixes in and uploaded so do yourself a favor and tune in on our jukebox (it even pops up these days !) for 2 oh so different and diverse mixes from our favorite globetrotters Lefto and Gilles Peterson. These will def keep you in the mood until either of the boys roll through your town one day soon. Check in for the almost weekly GP Sportswide posts and a new column starting soon from Lefto who had this to say about his one-take 66 Mix:

I always try to find a way to keep a mix special. trying to mix old classics like Poncho Sanchez or Madvillain’s classic Cedar Walton with new bangers, and still keeping the whole mix fresh and in perfect balance. This 66 minutes one-take mix features the latest works of Vienna’s genius Dorian Concept, Seiji’s insane “I Can’t Let It Go”, Futuristica’s female talent Masirah as well as electronic an dubstep insanity by James Blake, Kode9 and Silkie. Ending with the splendid remix by Afta-1 and one of my favorite Ahmad Jamal track called “invitation”. Much love to all the producers and musicians out there coming with the fresh sounds.
