Worldwide Festival kicks off Thursday

Just picked up the beach supplies and heading down a day early to Sete to settle in before the Worldwide Festival begins this Thursday through Sunday 5th of July. Even if i never loved a cozy, fun and sexy boutique Festival beachside and have experienced WF for the past 2 years, I would still no doubt be recommending this gem. The lineup is top, the locations sublime, the girls um yeah you guessed it, the sound systems booming, the organizers ever so gracious and on it ! – all in all glorious and with that state of mind i’ll happily gonna be the roving reporter on and offsite so stay tuned.

Day 8 Wimbledon update

We’re not so technical when it comes to scores on games and matches ‘cept maybe when it’s Wimbledon where so many great matches are being played plus a number of our players are still in the running. Clearly much of the attention is on the roarin’ Andy Murray, the ever feisty Williams sisters, the Russian girls Safina and Dementieva and strong performances by Federer and Roddick and clearly Tommy Haas (above) is playing tremendously as he heads into the 5th round.

Track of the Day: Miike Snow “Animal (Fake Blood Remix)”

Miike Snow got some early dap for their seemingly indie focus, yet are indeed from Swedish pop’s epicenter with credits that include Britney and Kylie. On initial glimpse, they might have been able to ride the coat-tails of a group like Peter, Bjorn and John…

I Love My Bicycle: The Story of FBM Bikes

As the Bicycle Film Festival heads west, one of the films getting attention is this sort of low-fi underdog story of FBM bikes, the indie BMX bike company. FBM stands for ‘fat bald man’, a sort of credo for this boostrapped company begun by upstart teens…

Watch: ‘180 South’ Trailer – Revisiting Chouinard’s Journey

In 1968, Yvon Chouinard made an epic journey that changed his life and, it turns out, many others. Chouinard and his best friend Doug Tompkins took to explore untouched nature, mountain ranges to be climbed and waves to be surfed, from California to deep Patagonia (Argentina). They were transformed by the experience which they filmed, and eventually led to 2 million acres of wilderness being saved.

I Start to Run: White Denim’s workout – not !

I would probably not recommend following the White Denim workout regime – not in the gym nor um especially running for your life with some hill billy chasing you ! But hell yeah, i most definitely do recommend their latest album ‘Fits’ – a very workout friendly 12 tune ‘jukebox’ romp including the stompin’ ‘I Start to Run’ which has gotten us so excited that we’re naming our new fitness column after it !

LA’s Dance Music Hardcore: DJ Harvey

Over the weekend, dance music was on full display, with loads of DJs in town, including heavyweights like Van Dyk and Oakenfold holding court at the Electric Daisy Carnival, which was a two-night event in downtown Los Angeles. Obviously, the suburban kid quotient was high, and so were the spirits of most in attendance. The marvel was, however…

Keepin’ it Deep: A Messenger Story

Messengers are the invisible urban ambassadors to bike culture. However, their story is seldom the focus of mainstream lore. This looks like a promising glimpse of several San Francisco (the city is known for them) bike messengers.

The Bloc Party Glastonbury Olympics

This might be the sportiest that Bloc Party actually get – whilst hangin’ out backstage at this weekend’s mighty Glastonbury the boys decided to put on their very own Olympic 2012 preview – huhm may need a bit more effort lads. I’m betting though that they played a crackin’ Glasto show and look forward to the new album.

Track of the Day: Grace Jones – Love You to Life

In 1981, British pop magazine named Grace Jones’ fifth album “Nightclubbing,” as the album of the year. Brimming with the bottomless rhythms of reggae legends Sly & Robbie and Jones’ inimitable contralto croon, the symphonic drama and shrewd cover tunes (she positively owns “Private Life” by the Pretenders as well as Iggy Pop’s “Nightclubbing”)

Gilles Peterson Sportswide – who has any spare Wimbledon centre court ?

GP has returned from Havana and we will soon here some of the tunes from his new Havana Cultura album he’s working on – as an avid tennis fan, for sure he would not miss a day or two at Wimbledon – and so here’s his musings on his history with Wimbledon and todays runnings:

I first went to Wimbledon as a thirteen year old searching for a bit of extra cash. I didn’t quite mug old ladies but I managed to flog them copies of the Daily Mail – 6am starts and ‘full order of play’ ….

Sports Crossovers: Is Tiger Going to Cricket?

Found on a UK sports gambling site, these crazy juxtapositions are obviously taking the piss, but you can almost see their points. Tiger would take any other sport to a new level, especially here in the US. Cricket is still a mystery to much of his audience…

Track(s) of the Day: DJ Hell – “U Can Dance” / “The DJ”

Notorious for his role in the electroclash movement of the early ‘00s, Hell has never shied away from putting as much personality into his music as possible. It’s never been so evident as “Teufelswerk,” a sprawling double-disc set divided into discs labeled “Night” and “Day.”
